Basil Cameron stands for Byron Shire Council

Goonengerry resident Basil Cameron has confirmed his candicacy.
I am standing because I believe I can make a difference, Mr Cameron said in a press release. ‘The immense challenges posed by climate change mean that now more than ever, the community needs to be heard and engaged in creating a sustainable future. ‘We must not lose sight of the fundamentals – environmental sustainability is the bedrock on which our social and economic wellbeing is built.

My priorities include protection of the environment, building a resilient local economy, improving community consultation, saying no to rampant and inappropriate development, supporting our vibrant arts and music industries, getting a better deal for young people and the hinterland. I will listen to and work with all groups across the whole Shire.

‘With over twenty years involvement in supporting and building community locally, I believe I have the right experience.’ Mr Cameron was admitted as a solicitor in 2007 and is currently a member of Byron Shire Council’s Sustainability Committee, Community Groups Representative on the Tourism Advisory Panel, Treasurer for Goonengerry Landcare, Campaign Coordinator for TOOT (Trains On Our Tracks), and Vice-President of Northern Rivers Trains for the Future
