Concert for Adults
Friday 21st July, 7.15pm "Stories to Light the Dark" Stories
for adults with Nancy Mellon and Jenni Cargill at the Drill Hall. $12/$10.
Bookings 66846 548 or tickets from Mullumbimby Bookshop.
When those now famous miners, Todd Russel and Brant Webb were trapped for so long deep in the Earth, they lit the unrelenting dark with stories of their families, happy memories and their quirky, earthy brand of Aussie humour and humility. Stories and myth can light the dark for us, help inspire us to find the strength, courage and determination we need to live life well and heartily. They can reconnect us with the ancient inner wisdom that is always a heartbeat away and yet can be so hard to find at times. If you feel you'd like to experience something a little different and relax into some warming mid-Winter wisdom, book yourself in for the upcoming storytelling concert for adults "Stories to Light the Dark" on Friday, July 21 at the Drill Hall, Mullumbimby.
The concert will feature Nancy Mellon, who runs her own Therapeutic Storytelling School in the USA and Byron Bay's own storyteller, Jenni Cargill, whose last concert in the Drill Hall drew a capacity crowd for her retelling of the Sumerian Goddess Inanna's Descent To the Underworld. Jenni is a regular performer at the Woodford Folk Festival and performed and taught at The 2004 Byron Bay Writers Festival. Her CD "Wonder Tales of Earth and Sea" won a special award from the National Library of Australia. She is currently recording a new series of CD's- some for children and some for adults at Nomad Studio. For general information on storytelling or to buy her CD go to www.jennicargill.com.au
Now it may seem mean to exclude the kids from this one, but as much as children love stories, adult stories with big words, sophisticated concepts and sexual references usually make children fidgety and restless. Also adults without children around can relax and sink more deeply into the stories, so please book the babysitter. Also wear your warm woollies, bring your granny rug and a cushion to soften those hard Drill Hall benches, and prepare for a cosy, illuminating night at the Drill Hall. If you wish to be helped to really get into that sacred receptive space to receive this soul food, do arrive on time- as you will be offered a jolly good Mullumbimby 'smoking'. (Please note this will be of the ritual-purification-with-lavender- smudge- stick-kind- not the slightly illegal kind.) To book for the concert, call Jenni on 6684 6548. Time: 7.15 pm. Cost: $12/$10.
Other local storytelling events: On Wednesday the 19th July, Nancy will speak about her two books: "Storytelling and the Art of Imagination" and "Storytelling for Children" at Abraxas Book Shop, Byron Bay at 7.15pm. Tickets $10. Bookings 6685 5778. Though the Byron workshop is fully booked, the longer Melbourne versions Nancy is leading still have places. For more information about Nancy, her school and her books see www.healingstory.com.
