La
Belle Époque

La
Belle Époque; French for "Beautiful Era" was
a
golden age
in European social history that began during the late 19th century
and lasted until 1914. Peace
prevailed, new
technologies improved lives, champagne was perfected and Bohemian
lifestyles were pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre. Expressionism
became the new avant-garde, songs and waltzes flourished and
many playwrights wrote plays that entertained contemporary audiences
with their frank depictions of everyday life and sexuality.
