| La Belle Époque; French for "Beautiful Era" was a golden age in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until 1914. Peace prevailed, new technologies improved lives, champagne was perfected and Bohemian lifestyles were pursued in the cabarets of Montmartre. Expressionism became the new avant-garde, songs and waltzes flourished and many playwrights wrote plays that entertained contemporary audiences with their frank depictions of everyday life and sexuality |
